California Democrats gathered in Los Angeles for a “Stop the Power Grab” rally, bringing together some of the state’s most prominent political figures ahead of the upcoming general election.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra took the stage alongside Governor Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris and U.S. Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla. The rally comes as California prepares for its first general election since voters approved Proposition 50, a special election measure that redrew the state’s congressional district boundaries.
The measure and the state’s congressional maps remain part of the broader political debate heading into the election
Former vice president Kamala Harris and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) joined forces on the campaign trail together on Sunday. The “Stop the Power Grab” rally in Los Angeles united many prominent California politicians before midterm election day.
The pair lauded California’s Democratic candidate for governor, former health secretary Xavier Becerra, encouraging voters to show up for him at the polls on Tuesday.
“This is the moment that we prove who has the real power and who is going to fight. When we fight, we win,” Harris said. “And we will win.”
Newsom, Harris, and Becerra framed Tuesday’s vote as a chance to stand to fight back against the Trump administration.
“I have stood up to dangerous authoritarianism before and I’m ready to do it again,” Becerra said to the crowd.
During recent campaign appearances, Becerra focused his criticism on Trump instead of attacking his opponent for the governor’s race, political commentator Steve Hilton.
“We’ve got to prove that California does not take a knee to Donald Trump,” Becerra said at a rally on Oct. 30 in San Francisco. “We have to prove that what California has achieved is what’s going to make this country great for a long time. Not that we’re going to make it great again.”
Becerra’s recent attention to Trump mirrors Newsom’s critiques of the president’s efforts to restructure American elections and voting. Earlier this week he penned a letter to federal judges in California proclaiming his “grave concerns” that the Trump administration would try to obtain search warrants to confiscate midterm ballots.
Newsom and Harris’ presence at the event demonstrated a show of unity, as both figures are believed to be possible presidential bids in 2028.
Their appearance came after a day of intense infighting within the Democratic Party, erupting after Rep. Haley Stevens withdrew support from Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and endorsed his Republican rival, Mike Rogers, in a closely contested race that could determine which party gains control of the Senate. Stevens was ousted from the Democratic Party, and leaders across the nation condemned her endorsement.
California senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff also spoke at the Stop the Power Grab rally, with all pointing to Becerra as the future of the state’s democratic policies.
